Honoring the Unlikely Heroes Sergeant Reckless and the Forgotten Veterans
As we celebrate Military Appreciation, we pay tribute to the brave men and women who have served our nation. However, there's another group of heroes who often go unrecognizable – the animals who have served alongside our troops. One such hero is Sergeant Reckless, a mare who earned her stripes in the Korean War.
Sergeant Reckless, a small Mongolian mare, was purchased by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952. She quickly proved herself to be more than just a pack animal, carrying ammunition and supplies to the front lines during the Battle of Outpost Vegas. Her bravery and endurance earned her numerous accolades, including two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and promotion to staff sergeant.
Sergeant Reckless' story is a testament to the important role animals have played in our military's history. From messenger dogs to patrol horses, these animals have served with loyalty and distinction. Yet, their contributions often go unrecognized.
As we honor our human veterans, let us not forget the animals who have served alongside them. Sergeant Reckless' legacy serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by all members of our military family – two-legged and four-legged alike.
Rising Stars would like to take a moment to acknowledge the bravery and loyalty of Sergeant Reckless and all the animal veterans who have served our nation. Their contributions will never be forgotten.
If you know a veteran who could use help, please reach out to us for assistance. Jeff Clark and Ric Morris are more than happy to talk to a fellow veteran.
