Our History

Rising Stars was founded by Patricia Morris in Hawaii in 1971. In 1975 Patricia and her family moved to California. Since then, Rising Stars of Equestrian Therapy has provided therapeutic and recreational horseback riding lessons to physically and mentally challenged children and adults.

HOW

Our horses are carefully vetted for the job that they do. They are very experienced and have the ability to handle riders of all abilities. Our amazing volunteers are here to help lead the horses, guide and support the rider so they feel safe while experiencing the positive impact of horseback riding. Horseback riding is a multidisciplinary approach to neurodevelopment therapy and physical rehabilitation that produces specific benefits and provides overall conditioning of the rider.

THE RED HEAD

PHOENIX

Born in 2006, Phoenix has a rich history as a former cattle horse. While she may not be herding cattle with us, we're confident that her gentle nature will make her a favorite among the kids who visit our ranch. With her calm demeanor and loving spirit, Phoenix is sure to bring joy and companionship to our clients.

We're grateful to Esme for trusting us with Phoenix's care and to Dianna for providing a haven for this beautiful horse. Welcome, Phoenix! Be sure to take a close look when you visit and see her one blue eye.

THE SASSY ONE

ROSIE

Rosie, our lovable and spirited therapy horse, has been a cherished member of the Rising Stars family for about three years. This feisty filly, estimated to be around 6 years young, brings joy and laughter to everyone she meets.

Rosie's personality is a perfect blend of sass and sweetness. She has a weakness for treats, and her eyes light up at the mere mention of snacks. Her love for goodies is only rivaled by her love for rolling in the pasture, where she'll gleefully sprawl out and rub her face in the dirt.

But Rosie's antics don't stop there. This mischievous mare has a peculiar fondness for dragging volunteers through the weeds, much to their amusement. It's not uncommon to see Rosie leading an unsuspecting volunteer on a wild adventure, weeds and all!

Despite her playful nature, Rosie is a dedicated therapy horse who loves working with our clients. Her gentle spirit and affectionate personality make her an ideal partner in our equine-assisted therapy programs.

At Rising Stars, we're grateful to have Rosie as part of our team. She brings a spark of joy and energy to every session, and we're lucky to have her by our side. Here's to Rosie – our sassy, treat-loving, weed-dragging therapy horse extraordinaire!

THE OLD MAN

CHUCK

Chuck, our diminutive but endearing Mustang therapy horse, is a beloved member of the Rising Stars family. This small but mighty horse embodies the spirit of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh – always a bit gloomy, but with a heart of gold.

At 25 years young, Chuck has earned the title of "slow-moving old man" among our staff. But despite his advanced age, Chuck still enjoys the simple pleasures in life: treats and rolling in the pasture. His eyes light up at the prospect of a tasty snack, and he'll happily indulge in a good roll, sending dust flying everywhere.

Chuck's unique personality shines through in his therapy sessions, particularly with kids. He's known to sleepwalking while being ridden, creating an unforgettable experience for our young clients. It's not uncommon to see Chuck standing still, eyes half-closed, while a child chats away, completely enchanted by this gentle giant's calm demeanor.

Volunteers and clients alike adore Chuck for his gentle nature and affectionate personality. Despite his Eeyore-like tendencies, Chuck has a special place in the hearts of everyone at Rising Stars.

We're grateful to have Chuck as part of our equine family, bringing his unique brand of gloominess and charm to our therapy programs. His slow and steady approach to life reminds us that sometimes, it's okay to take things easy and enjoy the ride.
